Drone Pilots: The Future Of Aerial Warfare
(25) (2) The U.S. Air Force says it will train more drone pilots in 2011 than fighter and bomber pilots combined. The distance between the pilot and the remotely controlled vehicle he flies is redefining what it means to be a pilot, and creating some friction within the Air Force. From Alice: Drone use is sensible in one way. In another, it is a moral disaster? Why cannot the US ever see that we might be wrong? Or debate the long-term implications on "collateral damage?" That's the disgusting term used by the military ("acceptable loss of life" is the State Department euphemism)
for mistaking targets at fifteen miles in the air. What if Pakistan cashes in all its small arms and decides to buy drones? In Pakistan we created a formidable nuclear enemy. Aerial warfare was a total failure in creating peace in the Balkans in 1999, a hotspot that we continue to ignore as the EURO idea collapses.
